What

1600 Bus of Canola stolen from farm yard at NW 16-11-22

When

Approx Dec 15th 2021

Where

R.M of Riverdale

NW 16-11-22

My brother Dave and I were moving Canola as we do to make sure that it is in good condition and to keep it from heating etc. We started to go through the process and had filled our own truck with a load, which we had to leave on, as the grain auger that we use to dump back in the bin had a flat.

Dave was feeding cows that day and noticed a black pickup come in and out of the yard and didn’t stop. He was on his way over in the yard to see who it was and what they were wanting but they didn’t stick around. We are quite sure that this was someone scouting and of course seen that we still had the auger in the bin.

When we dumped the grain from the truck back in to the bin we didn’t go up to took but realize now that it wasn’t full.

The reason that we found the grain missing is that we were about to put a price target on the Canola so went up on to each bin to make sure that it was all in good condition to find that approx. 1600 bushels were gone.

This was a set of super B’s to hold this amount. Most farmers have one straight trailer.

I don’t think it would be anyone from very far away as you wouldn’t likely drive a big rig throughout the countryside looking for the opportunity.

With last summer’s drought there are a lot of people that had forward contracts that couldn’t deliver on because their crop was so poor. This is where I believe that there had to be suspicion on behalf of elevator agents that might wonder where so and so got the grain to fill their contract all of a sudden. When you sign a delivery contract, you have to deliver or pay it out, so there are several circumstances that are common this year.

I would like to talk with you more to see if there are other clues. Something to note is that the elevator agents know their clientele very well for the most part and know who has contracts and bills to pay. They are kind of like your barber in the sense that they have an ear to the ground.
